Willmott Dixon’s Bristol and Cardiff offices unveil exciting 2008 trainees
Leading construction company Willmott Dixon is planning for the future by welcoming nine trainees into varying departments in its Cardiff and Bristol offices to gain experience on projects across the region and hone skills in quantity surveying, construction management, planning and estimating.
Eleanor David and James Hanwell are both graduates and will be joining Willmott Dixon to get onsite experience for the next four years, as well as studying for degrees in surveying and site management, respectively. Whereas Nick Hancock, Martyn Benson, Mark Reston and Steve Birchenough are postgraduates who hold non-construction related degrees, and will take the next three years to complete a conversion course. Ashley Pickin and Aled Hopkins have been chosen to take part on the apprenticeship scheme in Surveying, and Matthew Dickens will become a production trainee, spending a year out of University to gain practical experience before completing his degree.
The company has recently won the Contract Journal’s “best place to work in construction” award and was placed at 31 within the Sunday Times’ 100 best companies to work for in 2008.
Willmott Dixon, one of the UK’s largest privately owned construction, maintenance and development companies, has a growing number of projects for the new team members to get their teeth stuck into, in both Cardiff and Bristol offices. The company are continuing with the construction of the WJEC office on Western Avenue, Cardiff and will soon begin the installation of the architecturally designed outer aluminium panels. They have also won contracts to build frameworks for Swansea University and the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). Developments within the South West are also thriving with projects at Cheltenham Ladies College and Swindon Library soon to be underway.
Brian Drysdale, Managing Director of Willmott Dixon explained: “We recognise that a successful business is built around the quality and contentment of its people- they are the biggest asset. Willmott Dixon is committed to providing a working environment where continuous learning and development is promoted, so that our trainees are set up for a long, successful career in the industry, as such adopting a ‘cradle to grave’ training approach.”
“We are extremely proud of our training schemes, and are glad that so many young people see construction as an exciting industry to join. We regard new trainees as the lifeblood of our company and believe the investment we put into them is a necessity. Many have developed through site and office based management to become senior directors in the company. These are the future of our company and we look forward to working with them.”
The arrival of the trainees is a culmination of a year-long process to attract many of the country’s brightest young people from colleges and universities into the construction industry.
