Description:
While this urban Manhattan hotel’s luxury of height and spaciousness never fails to impress, the details of handicraft and original artworks are even more visually inspirational.
Seen from the pavement, the townhouse façade appears to have only five stories, but a recessed tower rises up 14 floors, providing two suites with panoramic terrace Views over Manhattan. Within the modern, soaring two-story lobby, attention is drawn to details selected by designer David Rockwell, such as latticework and the woven walnut wood that create the entranceway’s extraordinary giant doors. Rockwell’s stunning Town restaurant has a 24-foot ceiling, and strands of Swarovski crystal beads trim its golden panelled walls. A mezzanine over the main floor poses as an exhilarating, yet relaxing place to people watch or sip a cocktail. Rich walnut floors, a reception desk made of ebony and parchment and more than 500 original artworks throughout the hotel offer a real feast for sore eyes. A site-specific work has been created for each floor, which might be a mural or a photographic work that spans the entrance to a room and beyond. The permanent collection includes works by John Waters, Do-Ho Suh and Bob and Roberta Smith.

Iridescent glass tiles, cashmere throws and felt-covered ottomans are uptown luxuries, yet a downtown vibe is created through adding unfinished surfaces, canvas-covered night tables, desks made out of glass and sawhorses, as well as colouring pencils and paper – a thoughtful offering for those wishing to go sketching at the nearby Museum of Modern Art.
